| The 2009 Toyota Matrix hatchback carries several new features for this year’s model. It has been redesigned from both inside and outside. It now has a choice of two four-cylinder engines. It is available as either automatic or manual, and has an optional all-wheel-drive for one of its trims. This hatchback is available in three trims –base, S and SRX. |

| The Matrix offers a choice of two engine types on all its trims— the 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 132-horsepower, and the 2.4-liter four-cylinder that generates 158-horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and four-or five-speed automatic transmissions are optional on the Matrix. Front-wheel drive is standard, while buyers can choose the all-wheel drive on the S trim. |

Standard amenities on all Matrix trims include power steering; power color-keyed outside rearview mirrors; daytime running lights; intermittent windshield wipers; tilt and telescopic steering wheel; heavy duty rear window defogger; 12-volt power outlet; four cup holders; auxiliary audio input jack; engine immobilizer and front center console box.
Power heated outside rearview mirror; power windows; power door locks; alloy wheels; AM/FM/CD with six-speaker system with DVD navigation; intermittent rear window wiper; remote keyless entry and cruise control are optional equipment on the Matrix.
Across the three trims, 16-inch steel wheels are standard, while 17 and 18-inch aluminum rims are optional. The hood is more pronounced, the headlights get thinner, and the body sides have become smoother compared to last year.
